This is the story of Jacob who wrestled with destiny in the middle of night.
Jacob, the son of Issac, found himself alone in the wilderness.
Suddenly, a mysterious man appeared out of the darkness and began to wrestle with Jacob.
Wrestling with the man all night, neither one wiling to give up as dawn approached. The man saw that he could not overpower Jacob so the man dislocated Jacob’s hip with a simple touch.
But Jacob didn’t give up. Finally, the man said. “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel because you have struggled with god and with humans and have overcome”.
And there, in the breaking dawn, Jacob received his blessing. The mysterious figure departed leaving Jacob with a new name and a limp.
As the sun rose, Jacob, now Israel, understood that he had encountered the divine and his life would be the same.
